Open Dance Project’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, follows Hermia as she runs away from an overbearing father into a forest filled with hapless young lovers, a feuding Fairy King and Queen, a mischievous sprite, and an uproarious band of amateur actors.

Based on Shakespeare’s beloved comedy, with a whimsical score by Two Star Symphony’s Kirk Suddreath and John Duboise, spoken text and narration, puppets by Afsaneh Aayani, and guest performances by Open Dance Project's pre-professional youth ensemble, ODP2, A Midsummer Night’s Dream offers accessible entry points for young audiences and their families to experience the magic of dance theater and celebrate creativity and imagination!

LEGO enthusiasts of all ages are invited to come and build at the Houston Botanic Garden on Saturday evening as part of the first LEGO Night at Radiant Nature, presented by H-E-B, the Botanic Garden’s hugely popular winter light experience.

Builders may pre-order sets from the LEGO Botanical Collection, then enjoy bringing their floral creations to life while surrounded by a living natural museum. All of the LEGO sets were curated from the Botanical Collection by staff at the Houston Toy Museum. Pricing for LEGO Night is $55 or $75 per person, depending on which LEGO set each person selects.

The $55 package includes daffodils, lotus flowers, and daisies; while the $75 set includes flowering cactus, plum blossom, mini orchid, lucky bamboo, and chrysanthemum. Both packages include admission to Radiant Nature and on-site parking, a $43.50 combined value. Houston Botanic Garden members receive a $3 discount on admission with either package.

LEGO Night will begin at 4:00 p.m., giving builders two hours to click, create and socialize before being among the first of the evening to stroll the Radiant Nature trail at 6:00, where the larger-than-life lantern installations transport guests to a magical world celebrating the beauty of nature and unique aspects of Asian culture.

Bring the whole family to the Houston Arboretum for free, themed scavenger hunts! Each month will feature a different scavenger hunt with a fun and educational topic.

Families will meet outside of the Nature Center building before heading out on the trails for an hour-long hunt that will sharpen their observation skills and help them learn something new about nature. Then, they will bring their completed scavenger hunt back to the Nature Center to receive a fun prize. From winter trees to pollinators and aquatic life, every adventure is different!

Now on view at the Menil is Photography From the Menil Collection: Curated by Wendy Watriss, an exhibition of documentary-style photographs that underscore how images can ignite conversation about diverse social realities.

The museum’s photography holdings are a testament to the interconnection of art and activism, art, and human history. Menil Collection founders John and Dominique de Menil often turned to art, including photography, to represent and interpret the battle for human rights.

A strong focus in this part of the collection is the fight for social, racial, and political equality in the U.S., with references to the Black African struggle against apartheid in South Africa, including an image of Nelson Mandela in his prison cell in 1994. Another notable inclusion in the exhibition is a lesser-known and rarely seen photo of Martin Luther King, Jr. moments after delivering his “I Have a Dream” speech. It is quiet, contemplative, and deeply moving.

The Menil is FREE and open to the public Wednesday-Sunday, 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Please note, the Menil is not open on Monday, January 19.
