Railroads have played an enormous role in America’s development and culture, none more dramatic in public perception than the iconic 20th-century locomotive and passenger cars designs for the Country’s high end railroad passengers and luxury trains. Beginning in the 1930s, Art Deco emerged as a prominent design theme. For railroads, Art Deco was manifested in streamlining, smooth design and innovative use of interior space and function. Using commentary and slides, David Vaughn will trace and illustrate these dramatic developments, using as examples the works of and rivalry between two well-known 20th-century industrial designers: Raymond Loewy and Henry Dreyfus.

You can also enjoy train spotting and waving at the engineers, a model layout, a toy train play set, photos and memorabilia of the railroad’s glory days and historic Silver Spring, and more!

Join us on Saturday, January 24 at 10:30 AM for a special Early Childhood Music Experience with Sarah King, LPMT, MT-BC of Reflections Music Therapy. This baby-focused, 60-minute gathering begins with 30 minutes of live, developmentally supportive music, designed to engage babies through sound, rhythm, and connection. We’ll follow that with 30 minutes of parent-supervised play in our playroom: a relaxed, open space for little ones to explore and caregivers to connect. While this experience is designed with babies (0-18 months) in mind, siblings are welcome. Drop-in price includes family. Members and package holders can use 1 credit to book.

Step into the shoes of global leaders, tackle pressing issues, enhance your public speaking and debate skills, get daily personalized feedback from champion mentors, gain confidence, and make like-minded friends.

Experience dynamic MUN simulations on engaging U.S. and Global topics, public speaking and improv games, trivia, transformative lessons, social activities, and explore your dream campus. The MUN Institute’s vibrant atmosphere, filled with flags and positive energy, will bring out the best in you, inspiring you to debate diplomatically in our polarized society, excel at MUN, and change the world.

On the final day, students take part in a thrilling simulation on a current global issue. They represent a new country, deliver a compelling opening speech, engage in dynamic debates, and collaborate with peers to draft a resolution. Parents are welcome to observe the final simulation.
